journey. Panels of Royal Purple, adorned with Ox Blood orphreys,
cover the Icons and large arrangements of Curly Willow are placed at
The Chair, the Ambo, before the Icons of Christ in Majesty and Our

at 7:30 p.m. Deacon Gary presides for a Liturgy of the Word and
Imposition of Ashes at 12:00 Noon and Pastoral Associate Peter

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT is celebrated with the Penitential

Eucharist, the catechumens experience the Rite of Sending, during
which they sign the Book of the Elect. That afternoon, they celebrate
the Rite of Election in the cathedral with Bishop Cordelione. The
Book of the Elect is returned to the parish and placed next to the
tabernacle to remind us all to pray for them as they complete their
journey to full initiation and the Sacraments of Easter.
ST. JOSEPH'S DAY FESTIVAL DINNER is celebrated on March 19th with a
SOLD OUT crowd in the parish hall! Once again, the members of our
Social Events Committee transform the parish hall into a typical Italian
trattoria. Dinner begins with homemade antipasti, marinated olives,
prosciutto wrapped grilled asparagus, and pizzettas, followed by a salad
of Mixed Seasonal Greens and Italian Vinegarette. The main coarse is
"Pasta Aglio et Olio" (pasta with olive oil, garlic, and Italian parsley).
An assortment of Italian wines and beers are made available for
purchase to compliment the dinner. Following dinner, the new statue
of St. Joseph is blessed along with all the desserts on the St. Joseph
Table. A Live Auction and "50/50" raffle take place before the
musical portion of the evening: Italian art songs and arias performed
by noted soprano soloist Jenny Matteucci and her husband

Parishioners join in on the Saturday morning before to cut, wash, and bundle the several thousand fronds that are blessed and distributed.
TRIDUUM MORNING PRAYER Each morning of the Triduum,
parishioners gather for the celebration of Sung Morning Prayer
which conclude with a beautiful ritual appropriate to each day.
Music is provided by our Director of Music, Organist, and Artist in
Residence, Don Pearson, along with Cantors, Louis and Stella
Renner. The liturgies are prayerful, reverent, and deeply moving.
THE TRIDUUM The Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper is
celebrated on Holy Thursday evening and it is the first time that our
Elect experience having their feet washed. The entire congregation
is invited to come forward and it is a powerful experience as
husbands and wives, parents and children, young and old come
forward to take part in this annual ritual. At the conclusion of the
liturgy, all present join in a candlelight procession from the church to
the parish hall where the Altar of Repose has been prepared.
Adoration takes place until 11:00 p.m.
On Good Friday, the parish hosts an Ecumenical Good Friday
Service focusing on "The Seven Last Words" of Christ. Seven area
clergy participate, each taking one of the "words" and giving a
meditation on that word. Once again, music is provided by Don
Pearson with Dawn Farry serving as Cantor and Soloist.
The principal liturgy of the day, The Solemn Commemoration of the
Lord's Passion and Death, is celebrated at 3:00 p.m. The service
consists of the Liturgy of the Word, the reading of the Passion, the
Veneration of the Cross, and the Holy Communion. That evening,
one final liturgy is offered which includes the Liturgy of the Word,
the Passion, and Veneration of the Cross.
On Holy Saturday, the Great Vigil of Easter begins in the
Gathering Plaza at 8:30 p.m. as parishioners gather around the fire
brazier for the Liturgy of Light. The New Fire is blessed and the
Paschal Candle is lighted. As the light is passed from candle to
candle, the church is eventually glowing as the ancient Exultet is
sung. The Liturgy of the Word follows and precedes the Liturgy of
Initiation in which the Elect are led to the font where they
renounce sin, profess their faith, and then experience Baptism,
Confirmation, and First Eucharist. All present rejoice in the
initiation of Kenneth, Dominic, Larry, Sharon, Alan, Sharon,
John, and Jim. Our Social Events Committee prepares a beautiful
reception in the parish hall for the newly-initiated to which all are
invited.
On Day, the church is once again filled to overflowing. The
Environment Committee prepares a spectacular environment with
the "Empty Tomb" tryptich as its centerpiece and it is as if we are
in the center of the Easter garden with its lilies, azaleas, hydrangeas,
and trees. Glorious music enhances each liturgy with the presence
of our Cantors, Choir, and brass, all under the direction of Don
Pearson. Off duty police and California Highway Patrol officers
provide parking lot control and security during the day.

bathrooms.
FUNERAL LITURGIES are celebrated for Anicia Gopez and Diane Valencia.
PASTORAL STAFF SPRING DAY Facilitated by Marge Perez, the Pastoral Staff gathers at the Rectory to review the previous pastoral year. A special dimension of the day is a ritual to thank Burt Smith for his five years as Director of Faith Formation and another ritual to welcome Frances Rojek as the incoming Director. It is a wonderful day of reflecting and reviewing all that has taken place in the parish since the Fall of 2010.
SANTA CRUZAN 2011 On the last Sunday of May, our Filipino Community sponsors the Santa Cruzan celebration which commemorates the finding of the Cross by St. Helena in Jerusalem and bringing it to Rome. The observance also honors the Blessed Virgin Mary during the month of May. The church is filled to capacity for the 3:00 p.m. Eucharist which is followed by a colorful procession through the parking lot. At various points in the procession, the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary are prayed. Upon returning to the church, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament takes place and the afternoon concludes in the parish tent for dinner and cultural entertainment. During the program, the Officers of the Fil-Am Ministry present Fr. Robert
with a check in the amount of $25,000 towards one of the classrooms/meeting rooms in the proposed new Educational Center. The Chairperson for this year's event is Divina Sevilla,

DIOCESAN DEACON SEMINAR On Saturday, July 16th, Father Robert
had the privilege of working with the Deacons of the Diocese in
preparation for the implementation of the New Roman Missal III.
The morning began with hospitality in the parish hall provided by
Deacon Gary and Diane Hack, followed by Sung Morning Prayer
with Don Pearson, Louis and Stella Renner. The seminar gave the
deacons the background to the history of the development of the
new missal, and then focused their attention to the General
Instruction, the Order of Mass, the role of the deacon, and "Sing To
the Lord: Music in Divine Worship." A practicum was a part of the
morning's presentation and the deacons were given an opportunity
to chant the parts of the liturgy that are appropriate to their
ministry. Lunch was served in the parish hall, again by Deacon
Gary and Diane Hack assisted by Susan Batterton. In the
afternoon, they entered into a Plenary Session to address concerns
pertinent to the Deacon Community.

CHURCH CLEANING Volunteer parishioners take responsibility for cleaning the church and bathrooms each week and midweek. This month's team included: Jun Bajet, Warly & Sami Ruiz, Angela
Bueno, Bill Saunders, Steve Rojek, and Nancy DiMaggio. The bathrooms were cleaned on the weekend by Theresa & Trevor Owen, Christina Wohlford, and each Tuesday by Harlan
Young.
BACKPACK SUNDAY For the past several years, our parish has adopted St. Peter Martyr Parochial School in Pittsburg. Our
Lenten Alms go to support its mission and in the Fall just before the opening of the new school year, parishioners are invited to purchase backpacks and fill them with the supplies that the students will need. Once again this year, our parishioners respond
generously to this annual project and contribute 60 backpacks.
TRI-TIP SUNDAYS Our Knights of Columbus sponsor a Tri Tip Sandwich Sunday on the weekend of August 13 and 14. All
proceeds benefit the Capital Campaign for the building of our
Educational Center. The event is so successful that all the
sandwiches are sold by the conclusion of the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist!
THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Members of the Building Committee continue to meet and prepare for Phase II of the Campaign: contacting all of the parishioners who have yet to participate by either phone or a personal visit. Our goal is for each registered household to contribute $1,500 over three years in order to help us reach our goal of $3.5 million. As of the second week of August, cash and pledges total $775,000 raised since the beginning of the Campaign in mid-May.
FAMILY TO FAMILY MINISTRY holds a very successful Root Beer
Float Sunday to raise funds and awareness of their ministry. $586
was raised to use to purchase new school uniforms, shoes, a book
bag full of supplies and an all weather coat for the coming year for
the child of the family the ministry is assisting. All proceeds
benefitted the family with the team absorbing all expenses.
VANDALISM AND THEFT Once again the parish is the victim of both
vandalism and theft. The air conditioning units are stolen for their
copper tubing, the security cameras are stolen, and on one
particular evening, a gun is fired by two men with the bullets found
the next morning in the parking lot. Additionally, on Saturday
morning, August 27, at 4:30 a.m., thieves cut the electrical conduit
that circles our church building and remove 500 yards of copper
electrical wiring. This causes a loss of electricity to the entire
building, the shutting down of our office machines, printers, and
computers. They also cut the telephone lines in several places
causing our security system and fire protection system to go down.
Parishioners Ron France and Rich Confetti work more than 10
hours to restore power and the phone service.
When the power is restored, the resulting surge causes the surge
protectors to blow and the three "Mother Boards" in the main
copy machine are blown out and at least three of the office
printers no longer work. Rich Confetti builds wrought iron cages
to secure the air conditioning enclosures and planning begins to
install motion sensors and bright lighting on the sides of the
church. While the police are doing their best to keep our property
and building safe, they are short staffed. The need for gates at the
entrances and eventually fencing all across the front of our
property becomes an even greater necessity.
FUNERAL LITURGY is celebrated for Barbara Oliveira.
DIOCESAN MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE APPEAL On the last Sunday
of the month, Sr. Sharon McMillan, SND, visits the parish to
make the appeal on behalf of the Sisters of Notre Dame. Her
presentation is outstanding and results in one of the largest second
collections for the Appeal in the parish's history, just under $3,500.
Sister is the newly-appointed Director of Liturgy and Music for the
Cathedral in the Diocese of Monterey. Meals and overnight
hospitality are provided by parishioner, Stephanie Woods.

for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. The children are also
involved in raising funds for our new Educational Center by
bringing recyclables each week and depositing them in the barrels
before they begin their classes. Our Confirmation Classes also
sponsored a successful Car Wash to raise funds for the Center.

registered households introducing them to October as
"Commitment Month." On the first three weeks of the month,
members of the Pastoral and Finance Councils give brief talks
before the collection to share their thoughts about Christian
Stewardship: Time, Talent, and Treasure. The fourth weekend of
the month is designated as "Commitment Weekend" when all
parishioners are invited to come to the altar with their tithes and
offerings as well as their Commitment Card to indicate what portion
of their Time, Talent, and Treasure they will return to God for all of
God's gifts and goodness to them. The Commitment Cards are
placed in the chest at the heart of the altar for the coming pastoral
year.
FESTIVAL KICK OFF DINNER The festival Kick Off Dinner is once

others, but all resplendent in attire! Appetizers are served followed
by dinner of either Chicken Piccata or Steak Oscar. The dinner

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE Each year, the parish gathers to
remember and honor the memory of those for whom Funeral
Liturgies were celebrated in our church since last All Souls Day.
This year?s liturgy was celebrated on November 5th at 10:30
a.m. A beautiful environment was created by Susan Batterton
with the Memorial Tables on which was placed photographs,
holy cards, memorial programs, and other personal
memorabilia of the 27 individuals for whom the Mass was
offered. During the General Intercessions, the name of each
person was read aloud as a Memorial Candle was lighted. This
candle became a gift to the family members at the conclusion
of the liturgy. Music was provided by our Director of Music/
Organist/Artist-in-Residence, Don Pearson, and Cantors
Louis and Stella Renner. Following the liturgy, a light
luncheon was held in the parish hall, sponsored by our Social
Events Committee. Special thanks to Susan Batterton, Marla
Plurkowski, and Lorraine Lohmeier for decorating,
preparing, serving, and cleaning up.
CCISCO EVENT On Monday evening, November 7th, our
parish hosts a major CCISCO event for East County. More
than 300 people attended this gathering which addressed five
issues that effect our quality of life: Immigration Integration,
Health Care, Quality Education, Jobs, and the on-going
foreclosure crisis and holding banks accountable. Sixteen
elected representatives from both State and local government
were present along with school board members from Antioch
and Brentwood. Twelve clergy representing participating
CCISCO congregations were present as well. The meeting was
positive, productive, and an example of how we can work
collaboratively with our elected leaders.
CLEANING TEAM Throughout the month, faithful parishioners
come early each Saturday morning to clean the church in
preparation for the weekend and the week ahead. Our
Cleaning Team for November consisted of: Alex, Sara, Tony,
Ramon, and Baby Heredia; Steve Rojek, John Branson,
Ernesto Bajet, Angela Bueno, Jonathan Francisco, and
Brian Cruz. The bathrooms were cleaned by Riza Mendoza,
Sofie Zimmerman, Harlan Young, and Mary Ewing.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TRI - TIP SANDWICH SUNDAY Over the past several months, our Knights of Columbus have
sponsored Tri Tip Sandwich Sundays. They arrive between 6
and 6:30 in the morning, fire up the barbeque, and begin
grilling multiple tri tip roasts. As parishioners enter and leave
liturgy, they can't help but smell the wondrous scent of the beef
cooking on the grill. Each delicious sandwich is sold for only
$5.00. Proceeds benefit the Capital Campaign and the building
of our new Educational Center.
THANKSGIVING BASKETS Once again this year, parishioners
respond generously to the request for Thanksgiving Baskets for
needy families. 148 baskets are donated, 35 of which come from
our adopted parochial school of St. Peter Martyr in Pittsburg.
The baskets are then distributed, complete with a turkey, by our
St. Vincent de Paul Society. Many thanks to Brian McCoy,
Dave Costanza, and Bob Carvalho for coordinating this
outreach.
A HARVEST FESTIVAL OF MUSIC The second in the series of
concerts takes place on Sunday afternoon, November 20th, at
4:00 p.m. when Guest Organist, William Vaughan, performs
works composed for the conclusion of the Liturgical Year (All
Saints, All Souls, Christ the King, and Thanksgiving). As a part
of the concert, the audience is invited to join in singing one of
the great processional psalms and two seasonal hymns. The
singing is nothing short of thrilling by the more than 75 people
who attend. A unique part of the concert is Bill?s ability to make
use of the many MIDI sounds that are stored in the sound
module and played in conjunction with traditional organ sounds.
The concert is followed by a lovely reception in the parish hall,
sponsored by the members of our Social Events Committee.
Our thanks to Frances Rojek, Mary Anne Douville, Lesley
Eubanks, and Lorraine Lohmeier.
THANKSGIVING DAY The parish gathers for a special celebration of Eucharist at 9:00 a.m. Music is under the direction of our
Director of Music/Organist/Artist-in-Residence, Don Pearson,
Cantors and the Parish Choir. The offering is designated for our
Contra Costa Food Bank to help them with all the needs that will
come with the Christmas holidays. The reflection is given by the
Chair of our Building Committee, Ron France. Parishioners
bring their bread and wine for their Thanksgiving dinner and
they are blessed as a part of the liturgy.
THE ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE gathers the day after Thanksgiving to remove the Fall environment and to install the
environment for the beginning of the new liturgical year and the
First Sunday of Advent. Beautiful panels of Sarum Blue and
Gold accent the Icons along with fragrant arrangements of
seasonal and evergreen branches at both the Holy Table and
Ambo. A new design and placement of the Advent Wreath are
revealed for the first time. The Great Wreath is slightly slanted
directly behind the altar and elevated with four brushed wax
candles, three of which are in Sarum Blue and gold and one in
Antique Rose and gold. Our thanks to: Pablo and Norma
Villegas, Sherry Morris, Denise Moss, Nancy DiMaggio,
Rich Confetti, and Harlan Young. New vestments, lovingly
sewn by Virginia Noack, are worn for the first time at the
liturgies of Advent I. They include a new Presider?s chasuble and

of St. Peter Martyr is placed in the nave of the church from which
parishioners are invited to take an ornament, purchase the gift

Advent. Close to 400 ornaments are taken and gifts returned to the
church to benefit our adopted school. There are sufficient gifts to
benefit several local public schools and families.
ST. NICHOLAS FESTIVAL DINNER A Sold Out crowd joins together for
the Fifth Annual St. Nicholas Festival Dinner on Saturday evening,
December 3rd. Once again, Chef David Costanza and his Kitchen
Crew prepare an outstanding gourmet dinner consisting of appetizers,
grilled Tri Tip and Pork Loin, roasted red potatoes, savory string
beans, artisanal bread, and Red Velvet Cake for dessert. The parish
hall is spectacularly decorated by the members of the Social Events
Committee into a Winter Wonderland. Following dessert, St.
Nicholas? arrival is heralded by the ringing of everyone?s bells and
then he presides over the Silent and Live Auctions. A great evening is
enjoyed by all present.
OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE CELEBRATION On Sunday afternoon,
December 11th, the parish celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of
Guadalupe beginning with Eucharist at 4:00 p.m. A special aspect of
the liturgy is the presence of the twenty Aztec Dancers from St.
Anthony?s Parish in Oakley, who danced to Our Lady at the
Entrance, Preparation, and Concluding Rites. The members and their
children of our Guadalupana Society participated in the Entrance
Procession and brought beautiful red roses to "La Virgen." The
music, under the direction of Don Pearson, Director of Music
Ministry, was done in both English and Spanish. Following the
liturgy, the Guadalupana Society provided a traditional Mexican
Dinner in the parish hall consisting of Mixed Green Salad, Homemade
Tamales, Rice, Refried Beans, and both Chocolate and White
Cakes, decorated in the colors of the Flag of Mexico. Lidia
Tarango, head of the Guadalupana Society, coordinated this annual
celebration.
ADVENT/CHRISTMAS CONCERT On Friday evening, December 16th
the Golden Gate Boys Choir and Bellringers visited the parish once
again to provide a concert of music for both Advent and Christmas.
Before the concert began, our very own Dave Costanza, assisted by
his Kitchen Crew, (Tomas, Carole, Brian, and Vicki) provided a
dinner of Mixed Green Salad, Garlic Pasta, French Bread, and
Dessert. The church was filled to capacity for the hour and half
program of traditional Advent and Christmas anthems along with
various pieces composed exclusively for bells. Those in attendance
were greatly appreciative of the concert and the reception that
followed in the parish hall. Our thanks to the Social Events
Committee members: Marla Plurkowski, Susan Batterton, Amy
Batterton, Lorraine Lohmeier, Will & Catherine Avitable, and
Lesley Eubanks.
RITE OF RECEPTION INTO FULL COMMUNION, CONFIRMATION, AND FIRST EUCHARIST At the 5:00 p.m. Vigil Eucharist for
the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the parish was pleased to
celebrate the Rite of Reception Into Full Communion,
Confirmation, and First Holy Eucharist for Gary Daniel
Peterson.
BREAKFAST WITH SANTA Our Knights of Columbus and
Social Events Committee combined forces to prepare our
First Annual "Breakfast With Santa." Breakfast was served
in the parish hall following both the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m.
Eucharists. Gifts were given to children under the age of 10
years and a raffle was held for a beautiful Nativity Scene, the
Gift of Barbara Jackson.
CHRISTMAS Once again the Environment Committee creates
a beautiful environment that includes lighted wreathes and
garlands, six lighted trees on either side of the pipe organ
case, four large lighted trees in the corners of the nave, white
and gold panels of cloth adorning the Icons, and a
magnificent new Icon of Mary and the Child in Royal Purple
and Gold, hand-painted by Sherry Morris, flanked by two
herald angels with golden trumpets, announcing the birth of
the Savior. White poinsettias are placed throughout the
church to highlight the Altar, Ambo, Chair, Font, and Icons.
The Children of the parish tell the Christmas Story through a
pageant during the 4:00 p.m. Eucharist Christmas Eve. The
Vigil Eucharist is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. and the Solemn
Eucharist of Christmas Night is celebrated at 10:30 p.m. On
Christmas Day, Festive Choral Eucharists are celebrated at
9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Glorious music is under the
direction of our Director of Music, Organist, and Artist-in-
Residence, Donald W. Pearson, and includes our Parish
Choir, Strings, Harp, and Brass.
NEW YEAR'S EVE The parish brought the calendar year to a
conclusion with a beautiful celebration of Choral Eucharist at
5:00 p.m. The homily was given by our Pastoral Associate,
Peter Degl?Innocenti and a special element of the liturgy
was the Renewal of Marriage Vows of Steven and Sherry
Morris. It was a fitting way to bring the old year to an end
and prepare to welcome the New Year of 2012.
